Challenger 1 returns to Netherlands for refit

This week our Challenger 1 launch vehicle began its journey back to Habbeke Shipyard in the Netherlands for essential repairs and a refit.

The Challenger has been on station at Southport since 2018, where it has been used to launch the Heather White. It was originally a farm tractor that was purchased by Southport Lifeboat and sent to Habbeke in 2017 to be converted into a launch vehicle similar to those used in the Netherlands by the KNRM.

Following the success of the vehicle, a second Challenger was purchased in late 2023 and converted in 2024. Since its arrival, Challenger 2 has been rotated with Challenger 1 as the main launch vehicle.

While Challenger 1 is away, the launch trailer for the new FRC‑903 lifeboat will be fitted to it. This will allow our crew to see and trial the new setup before it returns to the UK.
