News : Southport Lifeboat help rescue lone yachtsman

28th September 2012, 9.15pm

Fundraising at the Southport Musical Fireworks Championships had an unexpected finish when Southport Lifeboat responded to a mayday call.

A yacht that had run aground on Salterís Bank, north of the River Ribble estuary, having left Belfast three days earlier.

Two lifeboats from Lytham, one from Blackpool and Rescue 122 from RAF Valley also attended the incident.

Blackpool IRB managed to locate the stricken yacht and was able to transfer the skipper who was suffering from hypothermia to Lytham Lifeboat.

Two of the Lytham crew were then transferred to the yacht in an attempt to tow her off the sand-bank and back into calmer waters, but this proved to be impossible due to the severe winds, rough seas and incoming tide.

The decision was taken lo leave the yacht, which eventually capsized.

All four boats and their crew returned back safe and well and the casualty was transferred to Blackpool Royal Victoria Hospital.
