News : Crew complete training in Stonehaven

From February 7-11th 2011, three crew members from Southport Lifeboat attended a ‘Search and Rescue Craft Operations’ course held at the Maritime Rescue Institute in Stonehaven, near Aberdeen.

The five day course involved shore based lectures interspersed with practical sessions out at sea. The crew members developed their boat handling and practical skills during the first few sessions. This enabled them to carry out more advanced training such as, search patterns, confined area movement, towing and crew transfers between moving vessels.

In the harbour, the crew also carried out a capsize drill. In the very unlikely event of a lifeboat capsize, the crew need to be practiced in what to do. The latter part of the week involved various scenarios including ‘injured’ people on broken down boats or casualties on the rocks. This allowed the crew to develop their newly gained knowledge and use it in ‘real life’ situations. It also gave them all an opportunity to take charge of the scenarios and practice the decision making responsibilities of the lifeboat coxswain.

The crew would like to express their appreciation to all of the staff at MRI Stonehaven.
