Southport lifeboat experience busiest year ever with 31 call outs in 2016

Southport Lifeboat experienced their busiest ever year for call outs and emergencies with 2016 seeing them save or help twenty four people, a dog and a horse

In total, the voluntary crew, based on the esplanade, were called out 31 times throughout the year.

The crew saved the lives of six people and a dog was also saved from drowning. They further assisted 19 more people and a horse - all were in difficulty or had been reported missing.

On one day alone the crew were called out three times where they helped rescue three different people, including a child, on March 19.

The 12 months also saw the invaluable work of the crew highlighted in an end of year advert by the Co-Op which was commissioned to show the importance of voluntary groups like Southport Lifeboat.

Among the life saving efforts of 2016, the crew helped save a man disorientated in the pier channel; they rescued two people stuck in mud on Southport beach, and when a couple and their dog were caught by fast rising tides far north of the pier, they were brought safely back to land by the crew.

Their busiest day, March 19, saw them search for a missing horse rider in the dunes at Formby, help in a police operation to track down a missing child and launch a search for a missing male who was feared to have wandered far out on Southport beach.

Coxswain Nick Porter told the Champion: “Last year we were tasked to the highest number of incidents ever in our history.

“While we would prefer to be quiet knowing everyone is enjoying our coast safely, the people of Southport can take pride knowing that their kind donations are making a difference.

“We attended 31 separate incidents, rescuing six people and a dog who, without our help, probably would have lost their lives.

“Unfortunately a number incidents involved vulnerable people attempting suicide, however we were able to help return them to safety.

“It’s clear that the need for our lifeboat and beach search and rescue team is as high as ever and we are glad of the continued support of all the people who donate to us, use our charity shop or play Lifeboat Lotto.

“We are looking forward to starting construction on our new station in the coming months which will be paid for entirely by donations."
